Period drama that's not very pacy but has a strong script charting the events of a 17th century domestic dispute full of carnal desires.

By sticking with the usual notion of a courageous, passionate woman triumphing over the forces of sexism, last night's programme proved that even the raciest costume drama can be psychologically bland.
