Starting his new job as an instructor at a New England school for the deaf, James Leeds meets Sarah Norman, a young deaf woman who works at the school as a member of the custodial staff. In spite of Sarah's withdrawn emotional state, a romance slowly develops between the pair.

The art of sign language, and the daily difficulty facing every person who has a hearing disability in the world are very evident in this movie. The magnificent cinematography, acting, directing, and screenplay say it all. This film is amazing. Marlee Matlin in her breakout role steals the show as Sarah. William Hurt also keeps up with the spectacular acting on Matlin's part as a teacher at the school Sarah works out. The epic love story goes through the evident ups and downs of all relationships, but in every single way, they are equal. This film is nothing short of a triumph.

I watched this film a long time ago. I've just watched it again and stil found it interesting and captivating. To me this film really reflects the problem that people with hearing impairness have. My mum is a teacher for deaf kids so I know a lot of kids with hearing problems. To my eye, this film represents their feelings and problems....
