I watched this for a film class and was disturbed for days by Lothaire Bluteau's fantastic and mesmerizing portrayal of a priest who must come to terms with his religious and social beliefs. Absolutely fascinating.

Definitely depressing. Rather stereotypical (except for the distressing ending) - think of the typical movie that focuses on the journey of one European as he travels through the wilderness and interacts with the "savages." Only it was genuinely touching in the last five minutes, albeit corny.

I saw it once, many years ago, and can remember exactly what it was like. You get chucked into such a realistic-feeling, remote part of the world in the past. Awesome story.
