A quintessential noir directed by Jules Dassin and starring Richard Widmark and Gene Tierney. Widmark plays a two-bit huslter working as a tout for a London club who is constantly looking for a better life in a series of dead-end schemes. When he cons legendary wrestler Gregorius the Great to let Widmark promote him, he finally faces the price of his ambition in the form of London's wrestling underworld. One of the best examples of film noir fatalism with themes of greed, betrayal, and alientation amidst striking noir cinematography of foggy streets, derelict buildings, construction sites, and wharves in London to a great score by Franz Waxman.

I loved Widmark in Pickup on South Street. This film pretty much confirms him as one of my favorites period. Honestly, I think I like this film more for his performance than anything else.

Released 60 years ago today, it's still uncompromisingly bleak in its view that all humanity is depraved - yes, even the "good ones". Masterful.

Underrated considered I have never heard of this movie and I have heard anyone talk about it. Interesting in the film-noir genre.

Night and the City is VERY DRAMATIC. It's a joy to just turn yourself over to relishing the melodramatic potential of cinema: lighting, camera angles, soundtrack, and performance. A long, deep, impassioned "roll in the celluloid" with the language of cinema.
