Richard Widwark on crack is fun to watch as he jumps, runs, prances and talks a mile a minute. However, the story is mediocre and the abundance of dramatic music cues is laughable. Jules Dassin made some amazing noirs, and this was not one of them.

the best way to describe this film in 3 words: Ni. Hil. Ism. Seriously, this film while i must admit that its really a great piece of cinema, is terribly bleak. but that doesnt mean its bad. widmark plays a character that you know wont survive the movie and he plays it pretty well even though you just want to yell at the screen to stop being a retard and just get a regular job. the whole film is rife with tension, especially the wrestling match, and the climactic chase scene near the end. but there are also some amazing quiet moments, most notably the last moments of gregorius. the film is so moody and atmospheric that its hard not to get wrapped up in the whole thing. and it really does feel like a scorsese movie.

Well made unusual story of a man struggling for a break and finds it in wrestling. Very compelling. It's only shortfall seemed to be the many side stories that at one point distracted. I don't like widmark, but he was good in this one.
