The Reader (2008)

The story of Michael Berg, a German lawyer who, as a teenager in the late 1950s, had an affair with an older woman, Hanna, who then disappeared only to resurface years later as one of the defendants in a war crimes trial stemming from her actions as a concentration camp guard late in the war. He alone realizes that Hanna is illiterate and may be concealing that fact at the expense of her freedom.

Superb performances; Winslet deserves the Oscar. A very good adaptation of the novel. It is moving, disturbing and will leave you thinking about the perplexities of life and how people can truly change your life; for good or bad.

I wish I hadn't waited so long to watch this critically panned movie. Sex, nudity, immorality, and really fine acting.

A film that simplyportrays the human connection as a wonderful yet tragic tale. Kate Winslet well deserved her oscar for her role in the film and Ralph Fiennes as wel as the young Michael Berg were simply phenominal. a plot that conflicts love as well as morality and how a once strong realtionship can rapidly change with time, and how hope can easily br risen only for it to end in a bitter disappiontment. this film catures the complixaity of human nature in a sceanrio driven with emotion and time. an excellant film overall.

The only problem that I have with this film is that it barely moved me and it's just a small intimate European post-WWII story. Not that it's a bad thiing, but it's not special enough to stand out. 1st rate acting, directing, cinematography and pacing. Reader's take note: This may be Kate Winslet's last nude performance on film. Enjoy, guys...or some gals.
