But [The Rainbow Kid] is not a light and gooey family film about how a boy with a disability teaches the able-bodied about life. It's something much smarter, much darker, and much more necessary.

Paputts runs into some problems with tone as the situations grow darker. But Harman's relaxed, naturalistic performance acts as a balm, and Christine Bougie's original music gives a touch of magic to the proceedings.
