It's hard to fault this movie for inspiring decades of drug movie cliches, but apart from being mostly awesome (at least until the dog dies maybe), it features a lot that is depressing in very predictable ways. The very last shot is nice tho.

Al Pacino's first big role, and he makes it all his own. I also really liked Kitty Winn, who I haven't really seen in anything else. Really low-down, depressing look at junkies, with no frills. If Trainspotting is "Fun" and Requiem for a Dream is "heartbreaking", both are still filled with stylistic flamboyance. This is like a documentary, with the occasional appearance from Paul Sorvino and Raul Julia!

A really good film, despite criticisms I've heard. Al Pacino gives a well good performance in it; it's quite slow going but it's a must-see for Pcino fans.

Great acting. If you're into drugs on film, or Al Pacino, check this out for sure. Unknown gem.
