One couldn't ask for a lovelier final film than 'The Old Man & the Gun.' And though it may sound like hyperbole, after such an esteemed career, it's one of [Redford's] very best.

The Old Man & The Gun is a small gem of a film. Small in nature but big in heart. Relatively short but delivers with a pleasure that speaks quietly and often. Based on the true story of lifetime bank robber Forrest Tucker, this is a film that rests its head on fine acting and an intelligent script. It's a film that observes conversations and small details. It's reflective and contemplative, making for true cinematic pleasure. Director David Lowery is expert at this, aided by superb performances by legends Redford, his last role and Spacek. Casey Affleck is also great as the detective hunting down Tucker in 1980s Texas. A film of sly humour and wry charisma.

Forrest Tucker’s swan song moments in The Old Man & the Gun are well tailored for Robert Redford’s swan song as an actor. It’s a damn good performance that also serves as a fitting curtain call.

Every time Forrest and Jewel go into one of their love chats -- in tight close-up, to go along with the grainy '70s-style cinematography -- the movie slows down a little more. By the end, it's barely breathing.
