There's something haunting going on in The Notebook -- in the story, in the performances, in the overall atmosphere -- that makes it hard to look away from, and equally hard to forget.

Notebook frames the evil revealed by the region's Nazi Occupation as the most treacherous of fairy tales: one that realizes our childhood fear that there really are no trustworthy grownups.

A great movie but man, oh, man it's depressing. If you saw this and The Road as a double feature you'd probably jump off a building.

Towards the end of World War II, people in big cities are at the mercy of air raids and death by starvation. A desperate young mother leaves her 13-year-old twin sons at their grandmother's house in the country, despite the fact that this grandmother is a cruel and bestial alcoholic. The villagers call her "the Witch" because she is rumored to have poisoned her husband long ago.

This is not a movie for the faint of heart. It really is good film, it's just brutal in the way that it portrays how poverty, war, and abuse cn turn anyone's life upside down. I'd reccomend it to anyone disturbing picture that is good in the way that it pulls no punches when it portrays a piece of world history in n honest manner.
