Lu Chuan's The Missing Gun must have been quite a revelation for a whole new generation of Chinese filmmakers, no doubt including Ning Hao of Crazy Stone fame. A clean break with the traditional style of the so called fifth generation, Lu's camera is never static as he literally jumpcuts his way through the film. But as the pace slows down after the frantic first half, so does my attention, and I'm left with a stylish, groundbreaking movie with a rather thin plot.

The climatic revelation of who's responsible seems plucked from the air, but Chuan's theme of memory reconstructed from external eyewitnesses is intriguing

Offbeat film about a cop struggling for self-respect

A tongue-in-cheek comedy about a cop fighting for self-respect in a dinky little Chinese province. Pretty funny, a little weird and loopy at times, but also really cute.

Viewers who thought they were watching a comedy will be left scratching their heads when it turns into a mundane murder mystery.
