The dreary story is about as exciting as sitting at a railroad station to watch the trains go by.

This solid adaptation embraces Simenon's favorite archetype, an innocent who mistakenly thinks he's committed some evil act, and then eventually actually does. . . . A little thriller that's worth every one of the 82 minutes you'll spend with it.

Implausible Simenon tale saved by excellent Claude Rains performance--A Claude Rains Technicolor Treat!!
