So many elements collide in White Noise that it barely manages to put together anything that actually seems to have been coherently constructed. What is even more surprising is that Noah Baumbach seems to want his film to have the same complexity of several of the themes that the plot develops and yet it is evident that the story gets out of his hands on several occasions, and more than once I felt that he left everything up in the air not with the intention of making it feel like a puzzle but as something that he wasn't able to make sense of either. From what I understand, because I don't know the book on which this film is based, the book itself is considered unfilmable, and being now its first adaptation, it is clear that Baumbach failed to crack the code and the film he was left with was a collection of ideas that, while not lacking in complete direction, also don't seem to have any sense that could be called definite or useful. Was it ego that made him try to tackle a story like this? I can only make assumptions, but in my opinion, he failed big time.

Writer/director Noah Baumbach has a mixed record of success. Marriage Story (my review) was powerful, while I didn't care for Mistress America (my review) or Frances Ha (my review). This time he's combining some of the issues from his previous work to create this rather unusual meditation on life, love and happiness. Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig play parents in a blended family. First, it's about their issues, then an evacuation notice causes a panic and finally they're back to navel gazing. There are undoubtedly humorous moments and some interesting sequences, but there are also extended periods of introspective dialogue that's more for the writer than for us. Driver (who's grown a gut for the role) is compelling as always, but it's hard to predict this film's appeal since it's an unusual mix. I appreciated it more than liked it. The credits are the most fun because Baumbach created a music video in the grocery store.

White Noise started out great. I was all in for the first 30 minutes or so, but the 2nd and 3rd acts lost steam. I'm glad I didn't walk out because the end credits music video almost made up for the rest of the movie I didn't like. It's an ambitious mess. Meh.

It feels condescending to brand Baumbach’s White Noise a “nice try,” considering how much the director has accomplished in the past, but it’s sadly quite accurate—if also more nuanced than calling it a failure or something that shouldn’t have been pursued.
