(Theatre) (First Viewing, 4th Siegel film) An interesting cop film/noir hybrid most distinctive for an early Eli Wallach performance, some terrific location work in San Francisco and a fantastic climactic car chase. It was a particular treat seeing one of the major scenes taking place at the Sutro Baths the later turned into a skating rink. Having visited its ruins on the SF cliffs and well acquainted with its history, it was certainly an interesting sight to see. It was worth seeing just for that. That it was a solid movie otherwise made it all the better.

It's starts off as a pretty good police procedural. Then Eli shows up to steal the movie and the whole thing takes a suspenseful twist into a world full of psychos and heroin. Amazing stuff.

Very cool crime story from director Don Siegel and screenwriter Stirling Silliphant. Less of a film noir and more of a tough b-flick with a stellar cast, especially Eli Wallach as a psychotic killer. Though Wallach steals the show, Richard Jaeckel and Robert Keith are also terrific. Director Siegel makes great use of several San Francisco locations, particularly the chase at the end, and directs with his typical tough efficient style.

A wry joke appreciated by Don Siegel in a scrupulous study of the San Francisco topography

Much of it is a pretty generic police procedural, but the last half hour, with its fantastic use of San Francisco's Cliff House and dramatic car chase, ultimately saves it.
