Dancer is the man! This was real ruthlessness for 1958. Kicking a guy in a wheelchair off a railing and onto an ice rink full of nuns and schoolkids... ha! Even if he was going to have you killed. Great gritty San Fran port-feeling film noir. I give this a semi-guilty 5 stars. "When you live outside the law, you have to eliminate dishonesty."

Pretty impressive for a lesser known film-noir and pretty shocking for its day, you can really see how much it influenced the french connection.

"In my profession, there's one thing I dislike and that's hearing someone's last words. You know, famous last words." Don Siegel (who would later return to San Francisco with Dirty Harry) directs this cat & mouse dual narrative with succinct professionalism, but it's Eli Wallach and Robert Keith's student/teacher drug runners that keep you glued to the screen. The film ignites with a whambam crackup action sequence that quickly sets the tone, but I gotta say I was less interested in the police procedural than the film's more nefarious activities. More Wallach! Still, solid crime picture. VF.

wow absolutely terrific. don't let the slow start fool u into thinking it's some kind of boring detective story. outstanding performance by eli wallach in one of his first roles. i'd venture to call it one of siegel's best films
