The admittedly simple premise — that El Libertador fought the good fight, for a worthy cause — is refreshingly escapist. By only briefly addressing the complications of Bolívar's later life as a ruler, it lets us revel in the antiquated notion, if only for a couple of hours, that there are some battles worth fighting.

Bolivar is eye-rollingly romanticized as a wonderful lover and an even better fighter in Alberto Arvelo's lushly produced, dully reverential The Liberator.

5/13/15 Netflix Started of slowly with more focus on Bolivar's love life than his politics. Picked up as the story moved on but still a little disjointed and hard to follow if you were not aware of his cause and South American politics. All in all an entertaining story.

I knew only the broad strokes of Simon Bolivar's life from history class. His life on film was incredible and inspiring in a way I wished the Mandela movie had been. The battle scenes were the only lulls in the movie, but I guess they were unavoidable in a movie about the guy who liberated the South American colonies from Spain.
