Raised in her grandmother's brothel, Piaf was discovered in 1935 by nightclub owner Louis Leplee, who persuaded her to sing despite her extreme nervousness. Piaf became one of France's immortal icons, her voice one of the indelible signatures of the 20th century.

This is one of my most favorite movies. Marion Cotillard captures Edith Piaf's true essence. It's as if Piaf reincarnated into her as she was filming. The shots are perfect, the music beautiful, the story heart-wrenchingly tragic. I LOVE Edith Piaf - the movie gives her the respect and the honor she deserves not only as an artist but as a human being. The cast is beautifully cast with phenomenal acting. Cotillard DESERVES her Oscar! Life is La vie en rose. :)

Very impressive movie, the acting was sublime, the atmosphere created drags you right in and doesn't let you go after the movie is finished, amazing. Left me with even more respect for Edith Piaf than I had before.

I was left breathless by this film and I was moved to tears more than once by the harrowing tale of Edith Piaf's life. She overcame so much, and had to endure more traumatic events than one should in a lifetime. The fact that was able to keep her head up through it all (despite an intense battle she would eventually lose to addiction) and still make powerful and enduring music is mind blowing. Also, Marion Cotillard delivers one of the best performances by an actress in the history of film. She simply is Edith Piaf, plain and simple. Although she doesn't do her own singing (because nobody could possibly duplicate Piaf's voice), it makes the film feel more real. Because she's so convincing as Piaf, we accept that it's Piaf's real voice coming out of her mouth because we feel as though we're watching Piaf herself. It's a mesmerizing film and it converted me into a die hard Edith Piaf fan.
