Raised in her grandmother's brothel, Piaf was discovered in 1935 by nightclub owner Louis Leplee, who persuaded her to sing despite her extreme nervousness. Piaf became one of France's immortal icons, her voice one of the indelible signatures of the 20th century.

Exquisite- without a doubt the masterpiece that put Marion Cotillard on the Hollywood map. Cotillard later won the Oscar for Best Actress. Well deserved. From writer/director Olivier Dahan comes the incredible true story of Edith Piaf; a French cabaret/music-hall singer of the late 1930's. At the age of 14, she joined her father performing in the streets all over France where she first sang... I will never be able to do justice in trying to explain more about her troubled life but you can find out all about it by watching this film or by listening to her music which was often inspired by true events of her life. Some happy but mostly confused and sad moments- all profoundly heartfelt. I credit my mother for listening to Piaf at home- if not, I don't think I would've ever known about her inspirational life story and timeless music.

this film is amazing... i'm a massive piaf fan as it is... but i was slightly unsure about this film... oh how wrong was i... Marion Cotillard is truely amazing as Piaf and deserved the oscar! :D

Marion Cotillard gives one of the best performances in film. She completely encompasses the life, soul and spirit of the tortured singer Edith Piaf. Marion is brave, venerable and beautiful in this role. She is truly one of the best actresses we have today!

This is a good movie, and this is my second favorite female performance of ALL time, next to Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice
