Talbot has a gift for making twee material feel true, but his grip weakens during the pivotal home stretch of his debut, and as a result the ending doesn’t land with the emotion it deserves.

A lyrical, visually stunning tone poem to loss, lies, reclamation and making peace with the past, The Last Black Man in San Francisco virtually defies conventional description. To see it is to believe it, even when it doesn’t strictly make sense.

This is a great movie. It will be too slow for some people, and a lot of people will not be able to grasp the underlying meanings and understand the real life parallels, or appreciate the stripped down dialogue. But the film really is beautiful and provides a surreal experience that is thought provoking. The experience is similar to a play. Like I said it won’t be for everyone, especially those who don’t like a more abstract movie, but it really takes you into another world and draws a parallel to this one at the same time.

The displacement Jimmie feels pervades most every shot of Talbot’s film and gives it all a slow-churning aura of foreignness and melancholy, a diasporic sadness that’s interesting to see in the context of a film about an African American, rather than a recent immigrant.
