Great Doc, it gets a 5 only because I love Miyazaki. Otherwise its a 4.5.

Many of its segments may be a tad too long for their own good, and it suffers from some balance issues, but overall this is a beautiful and interesting documentary about one of the most creative animation studios that just recently closed its doors. The process of film making when it comes to animation and how its main protagonist Hayao Miyazaki works to create these beautiful films is stunning and the way the movie presents the situation, with class and simplicity, make for an experience thats as beautiful as the journeys that the Studio Ghiblis films provide.

Miyazaki dispenses endlessly quotable observations. For example: 'Filmmaking only brings suffering... How do we know movies are even worthwhile? If you really think about it, is this not just some grand hobby?'

I guess the film was made for Miyazaki fans who already have an investment in, and knowledge of, his life and works. The film doesn't catch us up on many of the basics, but instead takes a really personal view. Great for the hard core fan, but some portions of the film felt like we were listening to the half-baked mutterings of an old man and taking them very seriously because that old man is Miyazaki. Is he interesting enough to warrant this much close up screen time? His films may be a little more impressive than the man himself.

I'm so glad this documentary was made, and grateful I got to see it. Although it's not exclusively about Hayao Miyazaki, it's essentially his story, with most of the film following production of The Wind Rises. I enjoyed the insight into the man and hearing him talk extensively. I think this doc did great justice to him, fittingly with lots of patience and beauty.
