A Thousand Years of Good Prayers (2007)

The film follows Mr. Shi, a retired widower from Beijing. When his only daughter, Yilan, who lives in Spokane, Washington and works as a librarian, gets divorced, he decides to visit her to help her heal. However, Yilan is not interested. She tries keeping an emotional distance but when this finally fails she begins physically avoiding her father. He confronts her about an affair with a married Russian man and she, in turn, lets loose about all the gossip she'd heard as a young girl about his alleged affair with a female colleague back in China.

I expected more about this movie but actors were ok. There were some funny parts when Henry O (Mr. Shi) and Vida Ghahremani (Madame) were trying to communicate in farsi and mandarin but that was all. The whole movie was sort of slow and emotionless.

Without much progress or revelation in the plot, this is a case where slow and steady doesn't always win the race.

Very little actually happens, since most of the time Mr. Shi sits alone in Yilan's empty apartment, wondering how to help her. But there's a gentle beauty in these long, anguished silences, and Wang and his actors make the most of it.

This was a very interesting film to watch. I liken it to "The Joy Luck Club" since I brought in my bi-cultural 2nd Generation experiences with me. Many of the interaction between father and daughter were very familiar to me. It was very uncomfortable to watch the honesty unravel in this film. Most people who are not familiar with the culture may find this movie slow moving and uninteresting, but this film realistically showed a very real and common relationship/communication between parents/children in the Chinese culture. Perhaps, the ones that are more Americanized are more animated and articulate. For me, it was interesting to see this movie tackle a character who had been ingrained in the Maoist doctrine and Revolution and the aftermath. I've always wondered what happened to that generation. Anyway, the movie will not gain popular support, but I found it very very enjoyable due to the subject matters it tackled.
