The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976)

Cosmo Vittelli, the proprietor of a sleazy, low-rent Hollywood cabaret, has a real affection for the women who strip in his peepshows and the staff who keep up his dingy establishment. He also has a major gambling problem that has gotten him in trouble before. When Cosmo loses big-time at an underground casino run by mobster Mort, he isn't able to pay up. Mort then offers Cosmo the chance to pay back his debt by knocking off a pesky, Mafia-protected bookie.

In the beginning I had some problems with this movie, especially with the developing of the story. But Ben Gazzara is fabulous. And also the camera man did an extraordinary job.

Cassavetes always impresses with his original shots. He practices so much freedom with the cinematography that one can't help but notice the "mistakes". These give the film character.

I have a feeling I didn't watch the proper version of this, but it was still decent. By far the worst Cassavetes, but Gazzara's performance is spectacular. It felt pretty meandering (which Cassavetes is known for, but I could really feel it here). i'll give the 1976 version a shot some time.

If you've only seen Scorsese mob movies (which are great, by the way), see this shit for a totally new perspective that is equally as effective. Much more nerve-wracking, that's for sure. Brilliant film.

There is just something about a strip club owner with taste and a heart that I find really intriguing.
