The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976)

Cosmo Vittelli, the proprietor of a sleazy, low-rent Hollywood cabaret, has a real affection for the women who strip in his peepshows and the staff who keep up his dingy establishment. He also has a major gambling problem that has gotten him in trouble before. When Cosmo loses big-time at an underground casino run by mobster Mort, he isn't able to pay up. Mort then offers Cosmo the chance to pay back his debt by knocking off a pesky, Mafia-protected bookie.

Cassavetes is known for his aversion to American cinematic formulas in the name of finding the truth behind human behavior in showing them in their pathetic bareness unclad by gloss. In films like A Woman Under the Influence, Faces, and Shadows, the subject matter is sliced directly from life itself, so one wouldn't be so surprised to see a capsule of realistic human behavior. But The Killing of a Chinese Bookie is a gangster film. The portrayal of Cosmo Vitelli in regard to his debts is crushingly pitiful, as he seems like an enslaved puppy in the incompatible guise of a cocky New York nightclub owner. Cassavetes really wants us to hate the loan sharks with a viral passion. If the film would not spend so much inexplicable time on Vitelli's nightclub acts, it would hit as hard as most of Cassavetes's other films, what with the grittiest possible atmosphere, reminding one of the old smoke-filled, classically grimy New York City that Minnie and Moskowitz wonderfully depicted in the the film's early house and apartment scenes.

This one is a slow moving, but ultimately intense, portrayal of the underworld of the 70s. Cassavetes' assumes quite a bit on the part of the viewer, which is all positive, as he declines to hold your hand and walk you through the plot. If this much emphasis on building convincing, dirty, flawed, and imperfectly intelligent characters was put in every film, Michael Bay would be out of a job.

This is mindblowing! Another 5 star Cassavetes.

The five stars is for the 76 version which is far superior to the 78 version which I'd give about a four or four and half. The 76 version just does what this film needs to do better, it attaches you to Cosmo Vitelli, makes you his friend, and overwhelms you with all sorts of feelings. It just digs itself into your soul. Sadness, depression, hate, love, dejection, rejection; all the colors of life are covered here, and you just have to dig it. The Cassavetes improvisational style, while not as strong as in his previous films, is still present in this one. Obviously, in making a gangster flick rather than a relationship drama Cassavetes is forced to fit the film into a more conventional mold than usual, but, as in his other films, the characters remain very genuine and the film still manages to feel remarkably sincere. Cassavetes always challenged himself, and continuously succeeded.
