Cosmo Vittelli, the proprietor of a sleazy, low-rent Hollywood cabaret, has a real affection for the women who strip in his peepshows and the staff who keep up his dingy establishment. He also has a major gambling problem that has gotten him in trouble before. When Cosmo loses big-time at an underground casino run by mobster Mort, he isn't able to pay up. Mort then offers Cosmo the chance to pay back his debt by knocking off a pesky, Mafia-protected bookie.

Fascinating film from John Cassavetes. It starts out slow but after the first hour, it's brilliant.

Among the very best of Cassavetes's work is his 1977 take on the gangster genre. Chinese Bookie tells the vivid story of Cosmo Vitelli, played with assurance and vigor by Ben Gazzara and the truth of his life. Vitelli is the proprietor of the Crazy Horse West, an LA strip club as essential to American culture as the nearby McDonalds. Vitelli's life get turned upside down when he goes in debt for almost $50,000 to a local Organized Crime syndicate. Told with Cassavetes commitment to truth and consequence, the film is a genuine portrait of the pathos of an American man. The photography by Al Rubin is harsh and brilliant. There is a reality to this film that you cannot deny and tenderness to Gazzara's acting that is unseen in recent cinema. For the gangster genre fan, this film is a must see and often overlooked in the genre. This film is available as a Criterion Collection DVD in both the original cut and a revised definitive cut. There are loads of extras a great addition for the true cinephiles.

A typically extraordinary character study from Cassavetes, focused, as a lot of crime drama is, on the shifting dynamics of inter-male behavior. Ben Gazzara in the central role is better than I've ever seen him, and Seymour Cassel is excellent as usual as one of Gazzara's team of nemeses. Also, it was great to see the goofy, menacing bulk of Timothy Carey - whom John Turturro has been channeling for his whole career - in what looks to have been his last decent feature role.

My first John Cassavetes experience, and that's exactly what it was. Raw, shifting focus, in and out of light, pure performances. truly awesome.
