The Jewish Cardinal (2013)

The Jewish Cardinal tells the amazing true story of Jean-Marie Lustiger, the son of Polish-Jewish immigrants, who maintained his cultural identity as a Jew even after converting to Catholicism at a young age, and later joining the priesthood. Quickly rising within the ranks of the Church, Lustiger was appointed Archbishop of Paris by Pope John Paul II―and found a new platform to celebrate his dual identity as a Catholic Jew, earning him both friends and enemies from either group. When Carmelite nuns settle down to build a convent within the cursed walls of Auschwitz, Lustiger finds himself a mediator between the two communities―and he may be forced, at last, to choose his side.

Informative, absorbing, but as obvious as its title and a bit too glib for its own good, this French import will appeal mainly to religious addicts fascinated by the feverishly agenda-ridden internal workings of the Catholic Church.

Aside from the power of the story itself, this is a beautifully written and acted film that presents the courage of a man who lived in two worlds, that of the Old and of the New Testament. Also an unflinching view of Pope John Paul II and his personal vendetta against communism overall all other modern issues. The supporting actors deserve as much credit as the film's leading actors. It's a shame this film -- and the story of Jean-Marie Aaron Lustiger -- isn't better known.

The way he finds to live and to die as a Catholic Jew may not satisfy any of the film's characters, but I'll say that I found it really touching.

A smooth biopic about an enigmatic hybrid, a Jewish-born cardinal who becomes an adviser to pope John Paul the second. Though he has changed his name and his faith, he remains culturally identified with Jews. His father is heart-broken by his conversion, which seems to ignore the value of his mother's death in the holocaust. His attempts to remain true to his parents' memory are complicated by cold-war politics. The film shows the day to day life of priests, refreshingly free of clicheed romance (His cousin provides the only female presence outside of adoring parisioners). The hero does a good job of striding around energetically, shaking things up.
