This film was pretty much a complete and utter disappointment to me. Having read the novel, which being about the life and rise of a Catholic priest through the early 20th century, is not only fascinating but very well written, I came away just flattened by the very poor adaptation for the film. The film is wholly episodic with narrative points that seemingly arise out of nowhere, disappear and then get resolved as quickly as they appear and disappear. There also seems to be an Americanization to the narrative, as if the filmmakers thought that if they didn't do this the film would fare poorly. The casting of Tryon was rather flat and what the hell happened to John Huston? A major character in the novel, he disappears after the first hour of the film. Totally disappointed with this film. Completely.

A very good film that takes on a number of difficult topics -- possibly too many. One of Preminger's best, if underrated, films, with a strong performance by Tryon.

A beautiful film about the title cardinal and his journey through life dealing with a full lifetime of issues. Highly recommended.

The best movie ever produced. Thrilling and inspiring. Just utterly sublime in every aspect.

Under Otto Preminger's direction a young Catholic priest confronts the mayor turnarounds during the first half of the 20th Century and his own personal conflicts as he rises within the ranks of the Church. The title is a in a way spoiler and the fact the it all is told in flashbacks. Slip almost to Soap at times... If it had been made a decade later it would have been a mini-series, that would have had an even longer running time than the current 175 minutes. Curiosly the movie isn't tiresome at any point, one watches it through easily, even if it stamps at times more than one time too much... The amazing supporting cast saves much of the film: John Saxon, John Huston, Burgess Meredith, Raf Vallone, Ossie Davis, Josef Meinrad and Romy Schneider.
