For those who think watching extravagant marital guilt is good fun. Bodies are nimbly unbuttoned and not ripped. This makes adultery boring.

Coming after the dissolute wackiness of Ludwig and the cavorting valedictory of Conversation Piece, Luchino Visconti's swan song L'Innocente is something of a genteel and stately affair.

Beautifully photographed and intelligently directed.

SHows meaningful similarities with Scorsese's The age of innocence, not only in title. You know from the start that the main character will fall down in grande style and Visconti knows superbly how to do this. Not much worse than Il gattopardo I would say.

I see it as a struggle between and within two outmoded systems of thought, aristocracy and Christianity, especially exposing the limits/dangers of a man positing/asserting (personal) freedom in an unfree society. If you want freedom, you must make/fight for a free world for all.
