The Homesman (2014)

When three women living on the edge of the American frontier are driven mad by harsh pioneer life, the task of saving them falls to the pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy. Transporting the women by covered wagon to Iowa, she soon realizes just how daunting the journey will be, and employs a low-life drifter, George Briggs, to join her. The unlikely pair and the three women head east, where a waiting minister and his wife have offered to take the women in. But the group first must traverse the harsh Nebraska Territories marked by stark beauty, psychological peril and constant threat.

Not since John Wayne and Montgomery Clift set off on their epic cattle drive in Howard Hawks's Red River has there been a more unusual pairing than Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank in Jones's magnificent new feature, The Homesman.

It feels like a missed opportunity but there is still quite a bit to enjoy.

What a powerful film. Couldn't stop thinking about it. cuddly is the ultimate frontier woman, possessing all the qualities necessary to survive and thrive in the harsh frontier, yet the gender and morality codes of the day cause her to be marginalised and dismissed. The acting is bang on, the period details authentic. The director refuses to employ the usual filmic tropes that allow us to be comfortable, instead giving us humour, tragedy, horror and grace in the uneven and unscripted rhythm of real life. Bravo.

Brilliant, with so many levels. Very strong characters, stunning scenery in its bleakness. A western with a twist, captivating.
