Roy and Gilbert's fishing trip takes a terrifying turn when the hitchhiker they pick up turns out to be a sociopath on the run from the law. He's killed before, and he lets the two know that as soon as they're no longer useful, he'll kill again. The two friends plot an escape, but the hitchhiker's peculiar physical affliction, an eye that never closes even when he sleeps, makes it impossible for them to tell when they can make a break for it.

A pretty spare, no frills buddy film/road movie/noir. William Talman is a generically creepy bad guy. Edmond O'Brien and Frank Lovejoy are his bland everyman captives. The indistinct and unexceptional point of view characters actually work to good effect, allowing the audience to wonder if they could do better. (the answer is, probably not. These guys do pretty well with the circumstances they're given, biding their time and taking only carefully considered risks.) The score was a bit grating, repeating the same brief dramatic theme, very reminiscent of the brief dramatic theme in THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, over and over again.

Right off the bat it commands your attention, and keeps it until the very end. The story itself is simple enough, but the way its told adds tension enough to make you seriously wonder what's going to happen next. William Talman is simply amazing, making the killer Emmett Myers' psychotic personality come alive. You can see the insecurity in his eyes and with every passing car or radio broadcast his urgency and subsequent reflief. Very well done.

The only film noir ever directed by a woman. Ida Lupino strips down to the bare necessities to tell this tale of a lazy-eyed psychopath holding two Average Joes hostage. Contains one of the most haunting images in all of Film Noir - the hitch-hiker has a bum eye that doesn't close, even when he sleeps. Such a memorable image raises this film out of enjoyable mediocrity into something truly haunting.

How many movies and tales of the perils of giving a stranger a lift have been spawned since this film? I don't know the answer to that question, but a lot... And they really shouldn't have bothered. This one is the best I've seen. That evil hitcher dude is one scary looking guy. My only crit is that the ending was a bit of a let down. But you be the judge and definetly check out this film if you ge the chance! Besides the film being great, it's also directed by a woman which was rare back then, and still pretty rare now when you think about it.
