The film adaptation of a dystopian future as envisaged by Margaret Atwood. Part morality tale, and part cautionary, told with a touch of intrigue. Natasha Richardson plays a woman caught in a web of moral rationalization and becomes the chosen vessel for the Commander's (Robert Duvall) seed. His wife (Faye Dunaway) holds the reigns of power. This film does not hold up well, as most tales of the future do not. The prop master is limited in what technology he can predict and therefore the film looks dated. However, the moral and religious climate still makes the basic premise a possibility and for that, the story still resonates. Well done, but this viewer would recommend the book over this. The three main actors do a credible job, as do the supporting actors, Aidan Quinn and Elizabeth McGovern.

This movie was definitely not as great as the book, but it is clear that a true effort was made with the adaptation. The film fails in providing the depth of ideas and character found in the novel, but succeeds very well in evoking the same ominous, creepy tone. The message of the film is one that still translates well to modern society. Read the book first.

Una tetrica historia de ciencia ficcion con tintes feministas, cortesia del director del "Tambor de Hojalata". Natasha Richardson nos entrega un estupendo "tour de force".

Based on the great novel (by the same name), this movie does partial justice to it. The main themes of the book are adequately conveyed, but I think some of the author's social criticism has been left out. The book implies that the dystopia it portrays is not only the right-wing extremists' fault. It rose partially because of the feminist movement and the extreme right's shared interests.

Maybe the reason reviews of this movie are so low is because of the " romance" categorization. While Nick (Aiden Quinn) is sultry, the movie is about life in an oppressive patriarchal regime. It has top notch actors and sticks closely to Atwood's novel. It feels a bit dated at this point, but it is definitely worth watching.
