The Great Caruso (1951)

Enrico Caruso's only passion is to sing. For that, he leaves his hometown of Naples, Italy, and travels to America to sing for the Metropolitan Opera. At first, his lack of education and poor background make him an outcast in the high-class opera world. Eventually, his voice wins him both fans and the hand of his love, Dorothy. But his nonstop pace and desire to perform at any cost eventually take their toll on the singer's health.

The movie that substantiated my affection for Turner Classic Movies ought not be viewed as any kind of serious biography or even as a coherent story. The plot and the characters are all incidental to the series of wonderful musical performances featuring vocalist Mario Lanza, whose voice surely emanates often from the jukebox in Heaven.

if u like opera mario sings all the favourites, super movie tracing his life and loves. if u dont like opera u will love it after this movie

Caruso started it all off - he sold the first gold disc - actually, a gold cylinder, in 1907 (yes, I know about the 1903 version!) This film does the man and his music much justice - he was never much of a music snob.

HIGHLY FICTIONALIZED BIOGRAPHY OF ENRICO CARUSO, GIVEN THE FULL STUDIO TREATMENT. MARIO LANZA'S ACTING IS STIFF, BUT HIS SINGING IS EXTREMELY GOOD. ONE OF THE BIG PLUSSES FOR THE FILM IS THE HUGE ARRAY OF GREAT SONGS. ANN BLYTH IS WASTED PRTRAYING CARUSO'S WIFE.
