A thing of great beauty to watch, a visual love story of Rome

The delicate story telling of lonely man at a crossroads brings out the best in Toni Servillo. Packed with immaculate cinematography, the view of the ancient Roma seen through the eyes of a man who is slowing losing everything captures the viewer's attention, escalating him to a state of empathy. This evokes a sense of calmness when we are reassured that Jep understands his purpose, and makes the most of his vibrant history. La Grande Bellezza is an extremely ambitious film that will test your patience, but in the end it's just a trick, and you will see past the ordinary, revealing the great beauty.

Sorrentino has slayed me before (Il Divo), and he's done it again with an homage to La Dolce Vita in a Rome that makes you cry its so beautiful. The people, including our protagonist, played by the divine Toni Servillo, are monsters. They sleepwalk thru empty lives to the boring rhythms of self-deception and toxic levels of self-obsession. Fortunately, they do so in some of the most beautiful places on the planet. The parties serve as a kind of nightmarish palette-cleansing between sequential courses featuring different key players in journalist/novelist Jep Gambardella's life -- his midget editor, his new lover who is daughter to a gangsterish disco owner, a tour guide of empty palazzo rooms, his best friend who has a giraffe, a Mother Teresa-like sister, a corrupt cardinal, his anonymous next door neighbor, who turns out to be a financier who is hauled away by the law.... and on and on. Tis a tad long, but, like a fever dream, worth it for the pictures.

stunning, exquisite, a twisting, swirling, glide through the decadent emptiness of contemporary Rome (or any late capitalist society). as beautiful as the title suggests, yet the growing melancholy that lives in Rome's ancient streets and ruins seeps up through the frames and the brilliant performance fro Toni Servillo, presenting us with an existentialist masterpiece that should be seen by everyone. reminded me of La Dolce Vita, Roma, La Notte and made my eyes feel like they were seeing anew.

This movie made me sad for everyone living a life without real human connections, in big cities or small. I applaud the writers and directors for their the eye catching intellectual and artistic approach that brought this poignant truth to the screen and hopefully an awareness to viewers that may help them avoid emptiness in their lives.
