Pleasant and preposterous in almost precisely equal measure, the film never offers anything less than two all-time British actors having the time of their lives, which makes it hard to get frustrated that it seldom offers anything more.

No Spoilers: Let's be honest here: the main draw of this story is its two lead actors, and both of them do a terrific job. I did like the story, but one could argue it's just an excuse to have these two amazing actors on screen. Think of it as watching a play in the theater that you already know: you don't go to see it for the story, but for the acting.

Yes, you would watch these two in virtually anything. You just wish it wasn’t this. They deserve something sturdier and far less head-slappingly preposterous, and that’s the truth.

Flashes of violence are effectively jarring when juxtaposed with the chintzy cosiness of much of the film. Less successful are two thudding, lead-weight flashbacks, which disgorge chunks of exposition and quash some of the fun in McKellen and Mirren’s deft double act.
