The Ghost Breakers (1940)

After intrepid working girl Mary Carter becomes the new owner of a reputedly haunted mansion located off the Cuban coast, a stranger phones warning her to stay away from the castle. Undaunted, Mary sets sail for Cuba with a stowaway in her trunk—wise-cracking Larry Lawrence, a radio announcer who helps Mary get to the bottom of the voodoo magic, zombies and ghosts that supposedly curse the spooky estate.

My best old scary movie. Bob Hope was great and Paulette Goddard! Wow I would haunt you anywhere! Back then of course.

** (out of four) A lot of people seem to like this Bob Hope comedy, but for me it is disappointing. I am a fan of Hope's and always enjoy seeing him onscreen even in something that isn't quite worthy of his wit and talent. Paulette Goddard is sweet and cute, but doesn't really connect the way I had wished. But my biggest issue is that I didn't find it as fun as it should have been given the premise.

This is one of my favorite comiedies of all time. Bob Hope's one liners are classic and transcend time. Paulette Goddard is smoking hot!!! Willie Best craks me up and gives a under appreciated performance that is the perfect supporting role for Hope. This is movie that will never get old and that truly will last for the ages

My favorite Hope without Crosby movie. Bob really fills the shoes as the leading man well in this, being brave and chickenhearted all at the same time. Some creepy effects actually raise some hairs on my neck and Anthony Quinn (umpteenth billed) is suitably mysterious. Oh, and did I mention Paulette Goddard?

Funny, though lacking modern political correctness that might offend some. Still, its Bob Hope, so there is whit, energy, and charm to win you over. Best time to watch: When its dark and snowing out with a crackling fire behind you. Scared me to BITS!
