The Ghost Breakers (1940)

After intrepid working girl Mary Carter becomes the new owner of a reputedly haunted mansion located off the Cuban coast, a stranger phones warning her to stay away from the castle. Undaunted, Mary sets sail for Cuba with a stowaway in her trunk—wise-cracking Larry Lawrence, a radio announcer who helps Mary get to the bottom of the voodoo magic, zombies and ghosts that supposedly curse the spooky estate.

The Ghost Breakers is a likeable film. It's a silly "horror" movie that seems to just be a vehicle for Bob Hope to say one-liners, but I'm ok with that. It's not Bob Hope's best, but it's enjoyable. It also seems to be the first comedic movie with a zombie in it.

If it focused more on the comedy instead of a generic horror plot, then this definitely would have been a fresher comedy. Instead, it's just a mediocre movie that just so happens to have a few funny gags in it.

Wow, I loved this 1940s Horror comedy. Hope and Goddard are fantastic. Mary inherits a castle in castle, but a murder, warnings and voodoo all stand in the way of her taking her inheritance. And of course there are some hansom men too! Sadly Willie Bests acting shows a now very dated role for black actors, but it's a very enjoyable film all the same, with an outstanding cast.

** (out of four) A lot of people seem to like this Bob Hope comedy, but for me it is disappointing. I am a fan of Hope's and always enjoy seeing him onscreen even in something that isn't quite worthy of his wit and talent. Paulette Goddard is sweet and cute, but doesn't really connect the way I had wished. But my biggest issue is that I didn't find it as fun as it should have been given the premise.
