Annie and Darren have been married for seven years, and they love each other as much as the day they were wed; they're affectionate, have fun together, and enjoy games such as crossword puzzle races. They would seem to have a perfect relationship, except for one thing -- they haven't had sex in ages, and seem to have lost all interest in making love with one another, no matter how they try to put each other in the mood. Hoping to put some adventure back into their lives, Annie and Darren come up with an unusual idea -- they each get one night in which they're free to find someone and have sex with them, scot-free. But is this going to help their relationship, or is it just going to turn a small problem into a big problem?

This one I really liked. The quality of the cameras, and the "polished" aspect of the acting did lack some, but also added a certain appeal and realness to the picture. I stayed engaged during the movie, and was touched by some of the portrayals of the theme and social underpinning of this movie. I look forward to more pictures by this writer.

Not at all what I was expecting. Going off the poster, the name, and the leads--Aselton and Shepard--I thought this was going to be a fun, lighthearted Comedy... but it's a pretty heavy look at a modern relationship, and the lengths people will go to just to "spice things up." I couldn't really root for either of them, because I felt like they were making a mistake from the very beginning. But, setting that aside, the movie is very effective and heartbreakingly honest. It makes us feel the anguish that the characters, themselves, are feeling.

A convincing illustration of the way stupid ideas can get traction if discussed at the right moment by people inclined to agree with one another, "The Freebie" takes a sweet if thrill-free marriage and threatens to throw it under a truck for the sake of contemporary sexual ideals. Writer-director-star Katie Aselton and Dax Shepherd are brilliant from the likeable, funny scenes to the awkward silences and bitterness that follow. But throughout, the believable naturalism of improvised dialogue and the intimacy of the movie's unassuming but skillful style makes the misguided protagonists easy to root for.

It's the same concept as that Hall Pass movie except instead of Owen Wilson phoning it in while eating pot brownies it just gets really dark, serious, and brutally honest.
