The Egg and I (1947)

World War II veteran Bob MacDonald surprises his new wife, Betty, by quitting his city job and moving them to a dilapidated farm in the country. While Betty gamely struggles with managing the crumbling house and holding off nosy neighbors and a recalcitrant pig, Bob makes plans for crops and livestock. The couple's bliss is shaken by a visit from a beautiful farm owner, who seems to want more from Bob than just managing her property.

Hilarious film of young couple taking on crude rundown farm and bumping into all sorts of hayseed locals and oddballs. A particular joy is the introduction of the characters of Ma & Pa Kettle--the ultimate good-natured lazy slobs. Mealtimes with the Kettles are a real high point!

[Claudette Colbert] is often extremely funny, and in the sequence at the local dance-hall, where she has to dance with all the neighbouring farmers regardless of their size and shape, she is exquisitely so. But I resent such a wastage of talent.

Hilarious. Ma and Pa Kettle are one of the great comic parings of the golden age of cinema.
