The Dungeon Masters (2008)

The Dungeon Masters explores the subculture of role-playing games, specifically Dungeons & Dragons, which for over 30 years has offered gamers the chance to escape their mundane lives and participate in a world they might otherwise never experience. Popularity and power are based on creativity and imagination rather than social status or wealth, and success is based not on who you know but on what you do.

For the record, I have played Dungeons & Dragons--exactly once. But of course escapism takes many forms. This is a case (or three cases) of the fantasy life (lives) of the petty bourgeoisie being dissolved into the proletariat and/or of unproductive laborers--the usual case.

Sort of like a trainwreck, you can't look away. It draws you in innocently enough, but then you just find yourself asking, why? Why?

I thought it would open my eyes and view the world of gaming in a different way....it just made me sad. To quote my brother...D n D ruins lives. :(

better use of time would be watching darkon rather than this... it never really got any deeper than the surface.

This is one of those movies that kind of straddles the line between loving the characters and exploiting their differences for others amusement. I'm not saying that the filmmaker was conscious of that necessarily, but sometimes you had the feeling that this was all a big laugh at these weirdos, rather than an honest attempt at empathy. Other times, you felt the exact opposite. All in all though, a decent film.
