Into Great Silence (2005)

An intimate portrayal of the everyday lives of Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse, high in the French Alps (Chartreuse Mountains). The idea for the film was proposed to the monks in 1984, but the Carthusians said they wanted time to think about it. The Carthusians finally contacted Gröning 16 years later to say they were now willing to permit Gröning to shoot the movie, if he was still interested.

The Silence Before Bach: Illuminates a complexity of ideas, including the passive reflection prior to creative conception and organic to musical formulation and the space between sounds, that fascinate the filmmaker, both musically and cinematically.

amazing. the perfect antithesis to our stupid mcdonalds-eating hootin' and hollerin' soulless un-culture. not to mention it's an amazingly beautiful film. every shot is a painting. we become so aware, due to the small amount of activity, that every sound, every creaking floorboard, every breath becomes an event.

This movie -- in its simplicity and immersion into the daily life of the Carthusian monks -- was like going on a retreat. I watched it in twenty minute segments... struck by the sense of beauty in a solitude that is lived in the presence of God. The fact that this film was largely without words allowed the audience to experience the life of this community in a way that no commentary would have revealed.

I'm not sure who I would recommend this to, but it was different than any movie I've ever seen.
