Into Great Silence (2005)

An intimate portrayal of the everyday lives of Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse, high in the French Alps (Chartreuse Mountains). The idea for the film was proposed to the monks in 1984, but the Carthusians said they wanted time to think about it. The Carthusians finally contacted Gröning 16 years later to say they were now willing to permit Gröning to shoot the movie, if he was still interested.

This is a remarkable work of pure documentary cinema, and a mystical accomplishment on the order of Wagner's "Parsifal" or Tarkovsky's "The Sacrifice." That's hardly anybody's thing these days -- it's not often mine. But the effort, in this case, is worth it.

Sublime. The ritm of the Seasons peacefully running along Life within the monastery, give us a vision of the repetitive and spiritual life full of beauty and poetry. The silence makes us aware of amazing details all over the film, like the light, the dust, the rain, the snow flakes, the darkness, the sounds. All the film is like a sequence of paintings, of an infinite beauty. It starts with Winter and ends with Winter again, closing and opening a perfect cicle or Armony and Beauty. Marvelous. A Poem.

A brilliant monastic experience. Watch this movie, then go to a monastery yourself for a retreat.

Wonderful. "The signs are not to be questioned, we are." A stunning vision of the sacramentality of all life. If you're still a Kantian afterward, you're mad!

Superb meditative film not for entertainment or a typical documentary as it totally withdraws the need to give cheap sensation that viewers usually require to keep their attention. Inspiring and spiritually peaceful.
