The Draughtsman's Contract (1982)

R. Neville, a brash young draftsman, is hired to make a dozen landscape illustrations at the estate of Mr Herbert and his wife Virginia. Aside from monetary compensation, the arrangement includes a sexual liaison offered to Neville by Virginia while her estranged husband is away. But when the murdered body of Mr Herbert is discovered at the estate, mysterious clues found in Neville's drawings point to the identity of the killer.

Greenaway ploughs the familiar landscape of the murder mystery, but plants in it new, exotic fruits all of his own.

Entertaining and wholly odd, this film is like Blow Up of the 17th century. More entertaining, outright, than Blow Up is, but it does drag near the end. Greenaway, of course, is masterful at what he does.

Brilliantly written and photographed, this portrayal of 17th century mores rivals Barry Lyndon in its portrayal of the period, from clothes to decor to the nature of social and romantic interactions. In fact, for Draughtsman's slightly soiled subtlety, I'm tempted to give Greenaway the edge.

A well shot and subversive film that gets a bit obtuse near the end but is nonetheless absorbing.
