The Draughtsman's Contract (1982)

R. Neville, a brash young draftsman, is hired to make a dozen landscape illustrations at the estate of Mr Herbert and his wife Virginia. Aside from monetary compensation, the arrangement includes a sexual liaison offered to Neville by Virginia while her estranged husband is away. But when the murdered body of Mr Herbert is discovered at the estate, mysterious clues found in Neville's drawings point to the identity of the killer.

Brilliantly written and photographed, this portrayal of 17th century mores rivals Barry Lyndon in its portrayal of the period, from clothes to decor to the nature of social and romantic interactions. In fact, for Draughtsman's slightly soiled subtlety, I'm tempted to give Greenaway the edge.

Lavishly mounted tale set in 17th century England is effectively cold and cut to the bone in its telling of an artist who exchanges creativity for sexual favors. Peter Greenaway's left field approach to the story is an acquired taste, but it's darkly humorous in a satirical way. The performances are on target just like Michael Nyman's jaunty score.
