The Draughtsman's Contract (1982)

R. Neville, a brash young draftsman, is hired to make a dozen landscape illustrations at the estate of Mr Herbert and his wife Virginia. Aside from monetary compensation, the arrangement includes a sexual liaison offered to Neville by Virginia while her estranged husband is away. But when the murdered body of Mr Herbert is discovered at the estate, mysterious clues found in Neville's drawings point to the identity of the killer.

Wonderful game. The green filter, Nyman`s pseudo-Baroque score, the cinematography. It`s all a wonderful joke

The Draughtsman's Contract is meticulously made. Every frame, costume and word is planned out and wonderfully executed. As such, it's more of a masterclass in how to organize actors and mise-en-scene than anything else. It's defiantly a feast for the eyes, even if the plot is ridiculous and convoluted. Peter Greenaway seems to realize this, however, and makes no attempt to make it seem anything less with the naked statue that haunts the film. It's wordy, slow and confusing, and completely soulless, but technically it is a masterpiece.

Very irrational film, touch you in every aspect - visually, rhythmically, emotionally, sensually. And change you uncontrolly.

Wow. The very definition of an arty film, which manages to be brilliantly witty, especially in its visual tricks. A wonderful film by a man who probably doesn't really like films anywhere near as much as he does tableaux... the "action" is a hindrance to the spectacle, or so it seems to me.
