The powers of good are pitted against the forces of evil as the Duc de Richelieu wrestles with the charming but deadly Satanist, Mocata, for the soul of his friend. Mocata has the knowledge and the power to summon the forces of darkness and, as the Duc de Richelieu and his friends remain within the protected pentacle, they are subjected to ever-increasing horror until thundering hooves herald the arrival of the Angel of Death.

Pure fun. Masterful direction by Terence Fisher and a great screenplay by Richard Matheson. It's fun to see Christopher Lee as the protagonist. The film moves swiftly and doesn't let up.

Is Dennis Wheatley the Alistair Maclean of horror ? This 1968 Hammer horror based on a Dennis Wheatley novel gets off to a sprint start and hardly stops for breath before it hits the finish line. It's amazingly full of magic, effects and action with heavyweight British actors Christopher Lee and Charles Gray clearly relishing their on-screen battle of wills and skills. My only complaint is the telegraphed Deus ex machina ending - but the ending of such an exciting film was always likely to be an anticlimax.

One of the best Hammer films and one of the least cheesy films about devil worshiping and black magic, which is very surprising.

A horror classic, it does get slightly boring when neither christopher lee or charles gray are on screen.
