awsome 50's end of the world movie with some cool effects & good acting. nuclear bomb testing on either sides of the world throw the earth of its axis & a little to close to the sun.

Why is it that the older B & W movies had better stories and the new better special effect movies don't have a story line at all? You would think that Hollywood would have noticed by now.

Nuclear testing shifts world's axis, causing bonkers weather conditions and chaos on the streets of London (and, presumably, the rest of the planet). Bleak- but-brilliant little disaster flick, full of snappy, witty (& realistic) dialogue. Val Guest (who also co-wrote this) brings his customary meat-&-potatoes, no-bullshit approach to the table once again (tragic to think he was reduced to making crappy sex-'comedies' by the late '70s). Leo McKern is fantastic in this! Pre-fame Michael Caine has a tiny role as a copper. Watch on a double-bill with Night Of The Big Heat!

Great classic british sci-fi. Thous not old enough to remember the cold war will likely not get this movie.

Only in the final three minutes does Val Guest's dull and talky Armageddon movie achieve poetry. Which is a real shame, given the subject matter's potential: the end of the world as seen from a Fleet Street press room. Here, everyone talks at each other without listening, and Edward Judd bulldozes his way charmlessly. Writer-director Guest films everything flatly and even the inserted library shots of firefights and ice storms fail to arouse much interest. And I haven't even touched on the dreadful performance by real-life Express editor, Arthur Christiansen.
