This movis is set in a soon-to-be-post-apocalyptic, nuclear cold-war era UK, with an improbable yet highly original scientific twist (climate change) that is clearly relevant in today's context. The story is told from people working in a newspaper's point of view, so you also get some "insider view" on the media. The rhythm is fast, the acting is strong, and the dialogue has film noir elements with a distinct touch of British humor. The ending is awesome.

Um.. don't watch this movie.. An excellent job of portraying the news industry.. but it doesn't belong in a movie.

This could be the earliest example of a phenomen which has become commonplace in recent sci-fi films: the idea that when something goes wrong with the world, the way to fix it is to drop bombs on it (see Deep Impact, Armageddon, The Core, Sunshine for example...). The movie has a fine, pacy script and excellent acting, using cut-scenes from real life disasters to illustrate the ensuing calamity of the earth being shifted in its orbit to move closer to the sun. How likely this scenario actually is is questionable, but it's perhaps closer to the edge of plausibility than a lot of movies one could name. Sadly, it ends with a shot of a church spire. What's the message here? That when science fails, prayer is a viable option? This kind of "nod to God" is all too common in sci-fi films. Although at least they don't try to pretend that God would (or could) actually do anything...

Nuclear testing shifts world's axis, causing bonkers weather conditions and chaos on the streets of London (and, presumably, the rest of the planet). Bleak- but-brilliant little disaster flick, full of snappy, witty (& realistic) dialogue. Val Guest (who also co-wrote this) brings his customary meat-&-potatoes, no-bullshit approach to the table once again (tragic to think he was reduced to making crappy sex-'comedies' by the late '70s). Leo McKern is fantastic in this! Pre-fame Michael Caine has a tiny role as a copper. Watch on a double-bill with Night Of The Big Heat!
