"it's never too late for a good story, well written" - this line is uttered by a character late in the piece and it seems to sum up the whole film. This is a ripping end-of-days yarn way ahead of its time told from the newsroom perspective in quintisential stiff-upper-lip British style. The script is near perfect, with a cast of solid British stalwarts giving everything to the material. Controlled, considered camerawork so perfect as to be almost indetecable. A true classic and a masterpiece of modern cinema.

This is one of my fave ever films. Excellent story which was a good few decades ahead of its time. A nice pace to the film, good acting and clever use of effects.

Made over 50 years ago and on a pretty tight budget, this is not as bad or cheesy as I thought it would be. The acting may be uneven and occasionally stiff (the real Daily Express editor playing the fictional Express editor looks like he was reading rather than acting), and McKern is lumbered with the role of Basil Exposition, but the script has its moments, the dialogue is witty, sometimes risqué and flirtatious and carries a message that is still relevant today. The use of news and real footage is clever enough to counter some of the more out of date and wonky special effects. Location shots (one in Trafalgar Square is particularly impressive) serve the film well, especially in terms of its authenticity and I cannot deny my fascination in seeing the real London in the 60s in the background (that is until the new print does such a good job that it looks obviously a painted backdrop). Fun and not as frivolous as I expected - with a nice touch of an ending that is fashionably ambiguous and thought-provoking.

Vastly entertaining film about the dangers of nuclear proliferation and the will of the common man to avoid an arms race. To the best of my knowledge, the first truly epic and believable disaster film.

This could be the earliest example of a phenomen which has become commonplace in recent sci-fi films: the idea that when something goes wrong with the world, the way to fix it is to drop bombs on it (see Deep Impact, Armageddon, The Core, Sunshine for example...). The movie has a fine, pacy script and excellent acting, using cut-scenes from real life disasters to illustrate the ensuing calamity of the earth being shifted in its orbit to move closer to the sun. How likely this scenario actually is is questionable, but it's perhaps closer to the edge of plausibility than a lot of movies one could name. Sadly, it ends with a shot of a church spire. What's the message here? That when science fails, prayer is a viable option? This kind of "nod to God" is all too common in sci-fi films. Although at least they don't try to pretend that God would (or could) actually do anything...
