A truly amazing movie. Chose it at random from a list to write a paper on for class, and was so happy I chose this one. A sweet story about a World Cup Soccer obessed boy, who is always getting in trouble for something, finally gets to watch the World Cup final. But still has the Tibetan messages, and the Buddhist teachings. You care about this people, and appreciate how they live and see the world.

A lovely, delightful, and quiet movie that's easy to swallow and doesn't disrupt the patterns of the world.

Made 4 years before Travelers and Magicians by the same writer/director. The story is a bit more insular, as it deals with monks living in a monastery. Much is lost on the non-Buddhist viewer, though it is material that are more knowing asides, and therefore neither essential to the plot, nor of great importance to the viewer. There are a number of points that the movie makes which is great. The journey is the destination, the greatest love we feel can be transmuted to the whole of the universe; that there are many enemies too many to defeat but that there is a way to defeat them all. That is to conquer hatred. Somewhat preachy, somewhat smaltzy; this movie ain't for you if that isn't your cup of tea. It is well put together, funny and doesn't try to convert you or drown you with its preach or smaltz. I'd love to work for the guy, if he's good to work for. His principles. Thumbs up, I'd see it again with a Buddhist teacher or someone who wanted to see it themselves.

This film, apparently the first film from Bhutan distributed worldwide, isnt a tentative step. Just about any film that must be qualified in a such a way, probably doesnt merit a view. The Cup (or Phorpa) doesnt need to be qualified. This is significant considering its Khyentse Norbus first pass at direction, and all the cast members are monks and not professional actors. Whats more, Orgyen Tobgyal won me over the minute he made it on to the screen as few child actors do. Norbu does an excellent job at leaving the complexity of the two head monks in tact. They are neither harsh nor out-to-lunch. They care very deeply for their pupils. The ease with which these two characters could have descended to characture shows Norbus good sense. While there are a few scenes that linger too long and could have used a bit of editing, itd be really hard to dislike this film.

Loved this film. Saw it by accident whilst trying to kill some time in Manchester. Been looking for it on DVD, but only knew it as The Cup - and no one seemed to know what I was on about. So if anyone is thinking of what to get me for Christmas....
