At the heart of this true story is Damien Oliver, a young jockey who loses his only brother in a tragic racing accident, hauntingly reflecting of the way their father died 27 years earlier. After suffering through a series of discouraging defeats, Damien teams with Irish trainer Dermot Weld, and triumphs at the 2002 Melbourne Cup in one of the most thrilling finales in sporting history.

The Cup has certainly been released at the right time to cash in on Spring Racing Carnival fever. But not all paying punters will be pleased with the final dividend returned.

A little bit of bland offering when it comes to an Aussie film. Just didn't leave cheering... the emotion wasn't there. The lead actors where solid but seemed to lack interest in their roles and weren't as convincing as i'd thought they'd be. A good final race sequence for Melbourne Cup but this is no classic film...a DVD watch I reckon, good but not great.

Cliche albeit true Australian story of the 2002 Melbourne Cup. Essentially a by the numbers retelling of events, this drama picks the right year and story of the annual event to depict on film, yet it lacks the ability to become more than a history lesson.

Story portrayed well although I think a bigger budget and more support during production could have placed higher status actors in the film. Shame. Stephen Curry however, was a great choice to play Damien Oliver. Great.

It's a shamelessly old-fashioned picture but if you like horses and fancy cantering off into the land of wish-fulfilment for a couple of hours, why not?
