The Triumvirate of Terror unite in this dark comedy written by Richard Matheson. Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff and Basil Rathbone star in this horror comedy. This is actually a pretty funny farce. Price plays an undertaker who finding himself in dire financial straits takes it upon himself to scare up some business. This is actually a pretty funny movie, Price is an absolute rogue in this, cold, acerbic and calculating. Peter Lorre is a bumbling and meek assistant and constant foil to Price's machinations. Karloff's turns in a pleasant performance as Price's senile Father-In-Law. Rathbone is Price's Landlord who become a target by threatening to evict Price for non-payment. The dialog is sharp and sometimes very biting to humorous effect. This a character and dialog driven film, although there are also several pratfalls that work pretty effectively. The direction and cinematography are actually quite sublime. This one is definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of any of the main players, Richard Matheson or Gothic Horror.

Karloff, Rathbone, Lorre, and Price, all icons of the horror genre, show surprising flair for comedy and watching them ham it up in this outing is a treat for their fans. A gothic, dark comedy gem.

This is an enjoyable dark comedy, even if it's not the most original premise. It's kind of a take on the Burke and Hare murders that have inspired many movies. What makes the movie special is the performance of Peter Lorre. I love Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone, but Peter Lorre steals this movie. He's just so funny. There's just something about his mannerisms and the way he interacts with Vincent Price that just has you laughing out loud. It's amazing just how versatile an actor he really was, able to go from playing creepy psychopaths to charming, bumbling buffoons. The comedy sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, but the acting is so strong overall that you can kind of overlook everything else. It's weak on story, and the sets and costumes aren't anything to marvel at like you would in other movies from this time, but seeing Vincent Price and Peter Lorre playing off each other is just such a treat.

Now this is what black comedy should be like! The timing is beautifully done and the casting was perfect. It pokes fun as a genre most of the actors performed in on a regular basis and Basil Rathbone's renditions of Shakespeare are so painfully funny it can only be a dig at the Olivier style performances of the Bard.
