Even in a spoof, it's nice to have a plot.

It doesn't speak well for this movie that an hour after I saw it, I can barely remember what happened in it. Neil Simon's dialogue is best suited to real characters with real personalities... in spoof, it becomes oddly larger-than-life. This movie seems so determined to be funny that it forgets to actually BE funny. It attempts too many take-offs on specific movies, rather than overall cliches and stereotypes, and just leads to silliness. And not the good kind. More looks of disdain than laughs here. Very disappointing.

If you loved The Maltese Falcon and can recite all the best lines from Casablanca by heart, you'll hate The Cheap Detective, which is basically just the year's classiest and most expensive rip-off.

A hilarious send-up of "Casablanca" and "The Maltese Falcon" with an outstanding cast. Not quite a sequel to (and not quite as funny as) "Murder by Death," it's still a delight. Eileen Brennan is especially good as a slinky chanteuse who can't remember the words to "La Vie en Rose."

The gimmick eventually wears a little thin, but Falk is great in the Bogart-ish lead role (which he previously established in the superior MURDER BY DEATH), and I must admit that the script does a fine job of spoofing the overly-convoluted nature of many of the 1940's private detective films.
