If you loved The Maltese Falcon and can recite all the best lines from Casablanca by heart, you'll hate The Cheap Detective, which is basically just the year's classiest and most expensive rip-off.

Yet another detective spoof movie from the 70s?! Yep. Again, we have a fantastic all star cast, and a very funny story. I really liked this movie, even if it isn't very different from other movies like it.

My dad watched the last half of this movie with me last night when he got home from work, mostly because he overheard Eileen Brennan's sexual innuendos from the other room and couldn't resist.

It's got everything of Casablanca without that annoying bitch Ingrid Bergman. This film really captures a lot of Casablanca and a lot of other films of the ear in a SERIOUS manor, but it has a great, subtle humor as well. Neil Simon is not just a spoofer--he's really interested in WHAT the films he mocks were about. And, really, he's not just mocking them. So give them a chance. This film might make you laugh, but if you don't laugh, then it might carry just about the same SERIOUS meaning as Casablanca, The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon as the actual films--but IN COLOR!!!

"Being a private eye may not be much, but we do have a code of honor. It's all right to fool around with your partner's wife, but once he's dead it makes it all so dirty. That's the way it is, angel. You marry yourself a nice guy, have a couple of swell kids. Once you're all set up and happy, maybe we can fool around again."
