Nineteen-year-old Danny Flynn is imprisoned for his involvement with the I.R.A. in Belfast. He leaves behind his family and his sixteen-year-old girlfriend, Maggie Hamill. Fourteen years later, Danny is released from prison and returns to his old working class neighborhood to resume his life as a boxer.

Great drama,with career-best performances from the 2 leads.The scenes between them are fantastic.

Great film starring Daniel Day Lewis as recently released prisoner who helped the IRA and is now trying to get his life back together. It's not as good as the earlier Lewis and Jim Sheridan films, but it's still very good. It gets better as it goes along. Emily Watson is good as his former girlfriend and Brian Cox also has a nice supporting role in the film. The boxing scenes are also very well done, particularly the final one. Oh, and my man Terry George did a nice job with the script.

Una de las mejores aproximaciones a la Irlanda del Norte con un IRA activo, que esto ya es historia, rodada por supuesto por un Irlandes obsesionado con este tema, con lo que podria esperarse una mirada sesgada, pero nada mas lejos de la realidad, puesto la brillante narracion nos pone tanto en la optica de activos del IRA como de gente del IRA arrepentida, catolicos y protestantes, e incluso ingleses. Con el boxeo como trasfondo se desarrolla el que va a ser solo uno de los muchos brillantes papeles de ese prodigio llamado Daniel Day-Lewis y la historia a su alrededor en una magnifica pelicula a todos los niveles.

Day-Lewis is virtually catatonic here but he's still completely captivating. One of his lesser talked about roles/films but one of his best.
