Not to be confused with the later sci-fi "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," this film about grave robbing and murder rests on the shoulders of Boris Karloff, who gives a striking performance as the witty yet totally menacing John Gray. Out of all the classic horror actors, I think Karloff is the only one skilled enough to easily pull off mono-syllabic monsters ("Frankenstein") and urbane, charismatic characters ("The Black Cat" and here).

Arguably the pinnacle of gothic horror. Karloff's sardonic performance is brilliant, and it's great to see Lugosi in a good film again, even if it's only a cameo. A must-see.

Yes, directed by the man who made Sound of Music. Karloff is a joy to watch as always.

Finally, I rewatched this and liked it better this time, but it still isn't as great as people say. There were some creepy moments, but I wouldn't call it scary. For a big plus, this is one of Boris Karloff's greatest performances, and his scenes with Bela Lugosi were great. But a little confusing and quite boring.

It's intelligent, eerie, and occasionally kind of scary. The only other movie of this genre and time period that I've seen is "I Walked with a Zombie," and it is better and less goofy and slow than that one.
