Amazing to think that this romance about a woman infatuated with an Asian was made in 1933, and directed by Frank Capra of all people. But just because Capra gave us all-American classics like Mr. Smith Goes To Washington and It's A Wonderful Life doesn't mean he wasn't a director interested in being innovative and being provocative. Indeed The Bitter Tea of General Yen (starring a young fresh-faced Barbara Stanwyck) may not be Capra's most well-know directorial achievement but it is arguably his most bold and daring story. It's rather dated, and even borderline offensive, but Birth of a Nation it is not. Worth a view.

Considered a little risque at the time (a white woman falling for an oriental) when mixed race marriages were banned in the USA, it now still works on a certain level, the sets and acting of the two leads are splendid. However, it is difficult to think Derek Malcolm chose this over It's A Wonderful Life, Lost Horizon, It Happened One Night, Mr Smith Goes To Washington and Mr Deeds Goes To Town as his favourite Frank Capra film.

An odd duck to be sure: substantially darker than the other Capra films I've seen, with a Chinese civil war and firing squads serving as the backdrop for a love story that never really comes together.

Barbra Stanwyck and Nils Asther exquisitely play out a delicate and unlikely love story behind Frank Capra's "The Bitter Tea of General Yen". In a story akin to "Anna and the King of Siam", Stanwyck plays a Western missionary in the Far East (China in the case of this film) who reviles the proud stubborn ways of a powerful man (Asther), but can't help but be drawn to him. It's an adventurous departure for Capra, who most often made uplifting films about noble middle-American simpletons, but this film features a much different look and tone. One memorable dream sequence even seems to recall Hitchcock, though coming years before Hitch even made a name for himself.

A surprising lost classic, nothing like what you would expect from Capra. The nightmare scene is the standout moment, but the film's climax is also an amazing piece of filmmaking.
