Perhaps only Visconti, who seems obsessed with the gloomy side of decadence, could have made Ludwig II of Bavaria seem boring.

OK, you need a long afternoon to watch this film but it's definitely worth it. Visconti's attention to detail is amazing and with the sumptuous cinematography and excellent performances, it's a good investment of those 4 hours.
