Ludwig (1973)

Historical evocation of Ludwig, king of Bavaria, from his crowning in 1864 until his death in 1886, as a romantic hero. Fan of Richard Wagner, betrayed by him, in love with his cousin Elisabeth of Austria, abandoned by her, tormented by his homosexuality, he will little by little slip towards madness.

Shows a very different Sisi than the Sissi-films. Helmut Berger is fantastic as the Märchenkönig.

Visconti was able to turn helmut berger into Lawrence Olivier... Need I say more?

Used, confused, disturbed: poor Ludwig comes across here as quite sympathetic. But not so as to prevent or discourage us from welcoming/cheering the end of monarchy/aristocracy. On the contrary, we see/feel the limits (to be overcome) of all the ruling powers/authorities of the age. And therein lies (at least an aspect of) Visconti's brilliance/excellence.

OK, you need a long afternoon to watch this film but it's definitely worth it. Visconti's attention to detail is amazing and with the sumptuous cinematography and excellent performances, it's a good investment of those 4 hours.

Slow-moving but fascinating for anyone interested in the story of the Mad King, Ludwig II. Great costumes and set design.
