A modern day version of "Wall St" set in Sydney, this number from Mark Lee is not a bad flick. Covers moral issues of the finance industry and how fear and greed can lead us astray. Matt Newton is quite talented (Bert's son) and is good in the lead "Bud Fox" type role (he has not done much film apart from "Looking for Alibrandi"). Not sure if this is getting a mainstream cinema release but not a bad DVD option if you like the genre (or work in the industry).

Money makes people do bad things. One could say that it is The Root Of All Evil. This is not an original message, and neither will this drama dazzle you with its originalality. It is however, a very enjoyable film, largely due to the quality of acting on display. I really felt for the stockbroker character, even though his downfall was quite predictable. The Sydney setting cannily helps to make the viewer feel like they are wallowing in the protagonists lavish lifestyle in spite of the films low budget. Go see.

First 2 mins & i was really worried i had made a big mistake choosing the movie. (amateur look -cheesy mouth shots to set up the bet etc ;-) but the movie was worth watching just for the beautiful shots of sydney. (made me want to go live there). 30 mins into the movie i was curious to see what the outcome would be - before then i didn't care much either way. overall - i would have loved to have seen a hell of a win for the hero - rather than to be left with the feeling that one shouldnt ever mess with the high class establishment (cambridge)...or else... something stuck with me out of this - am not quite sure what... perhaps it was the lead actors' sunny optimism - alongside the concerns of the earnest , girlfriend - maybe it was the feeling that stakes really are high in the game of life - and that people do have their own agendas. (even if one doesnt see the results on an electronic scoreboard)

Sydney's big money and bigger egos get a workover in director Mark Lee's use of a Chekhov short story filtered through Oliver Stone. An underdone script loses out to high concept but Budd and Newton offer solid work.
