Waydowntown (2002)

Four young office workers have a bet going to see who can last the longest without going outside. In the maze that is the downtown core of a large city, glass skywalks connect apartment buildings, office towers and shopping malls. Its day 28 of the bet and over the lunch hour, as the office prepares for the company founder's retirement party, things start to seriously unravel.

A failed attempt. I wanted to love this film - I just didn't. Don McKellar is pretty great though (as usual)!

This is about as high-concept as it gets. And about as Canadian as it gets. What other society could come up with a plot involving office workers placing bets on who could stay indoors the longest? Amazingly enough, the movie works like a charm. It's definitely quirky, perhaps an acquired taste that may not translate for international audiences, but there are some hilarious performances here, both of the over-the-top and understated kind. The direction and editing is just as unorthodox as the story, which some sly moves you might not notice or "get" the first time around. Definitely needs to be watched at least twice.

What results from introducing brains to Gondry, excluding the zombies from Romero's Dawn of the dead plus paranoid vocational uncertainty, claustrophobial panic and self-discovery is this mildly psychedelic mind fuck. The unreasonable but highly effective stylistic decisions keep this film at a 180 kph all the way through. Viscerally entertaining, an unexpected surprise.
