A washed-up filmmaker gets a second chance at stardom when he discovers stunning peasant Maria Vargas dancing in a Madrid nightclub. Goaded by his producer, the director convinces Maria to screen test for, and then star in, his next big picture. But as the producer's possessive nature and the realities of stardom weigh on Maria, she seeks a genuine lover with whom she can escape.

An attractive movie in many ways, not least with Gardner in the lead female role. 1001

I had TiVo set to record anything with Bogey and this one came up. I watched it the other night and was so pleasantly surprised. Asks a lot of the audience, narrated in flashback by various characters with overlapping POV. This is not a love story. This is an anti-love story. But someday we'll get tired of watching jealous husbands kill their wives. There are so many contemporary pop culture refs in this film it was fun to see where they came from.

I never knew this movie existed until last week, and I'm very glad I found it. As always, Humphrey Bogart is amazing, and Ava Gardner is so beautiful. It's not the average early '50s Hollywood movie. There's a twist at the end that you really don't see coming. If you liked the way that Citizen Kane is told with the multiple narrators piecing a story together for you, you'll enjoy the way this story is told. It's completely worth the time.

It’s overlong, talky, and sometimes stolid, but these are all familiar Mankiewicz failings. He shines in his deft verbal wit and novelistic propensity for detail, backlit by a highly personal blend of romance and cynicism. An imperfect film, but its excesses are as suggestive as its subtleties.
