The Barefoot Contessa (1954)

A washed-up filmmaker gets a second chance at stardom when he discovers stunning peasant Maria Vargas dancing in a Madrid nightclub. Goaded by his producer, the director convinces Maria to screen test for, and then star in, his next big picture. But as the producer's possessive nature and the realities of stardom weigh on Maria, she seeks a genuine lover with whom she can escape.

I saw this one in the theater the other day, it stars Ava Gardner as the title character who is discovered by director Humphrey Bogart and the rest of his buddies while they're visiting Spain. It's told in flashbacks while the characters in the film are attending Gardner's funeral. The film takes its time to reveal how Gardner died, but it does a nice job of doing it. I loved the way the different characters came into her life, I especially loved the scene at the dinner party where Gardner is eating with all of the rich and important people. Edmond O'Brien give a great Oscar winning performance as the guy in charge of public relations, I wish he was in the film more, his final scenes with Gardner are great. It's got a very good ending. And man, Gardner was very hot in this. Nice score.

Mankiewicz's bitter-sweet satire of Hollywood is extremely well acted by Bogart (witty), Avan Gardner (gorgeous), and Edmond O'Brien, who won the Supporting Oscar.

Love this movie so much! Both Humphrey and Ava were SPECTACULAR. Ava practically jumps off the sceen. Shining performance!

Must-see film from Old Hollywood. Writing ambitious and skillful but cynicism on all sides wears on us after a while. Ava is gorgeous but doesn't change much. Plot problem for me: don't find basis for marriage of Maria and the Count credible at all. She is a lusty gal who would not marry for fairy tales and money without sex first. And the Count's supposed motivation is to prevent the family line from dying out, but he knows he cannot sire a child. Why marry her then?
