Not a bad film, has quite a good story to it and it doesn't over do anything but some bits are a little guess-able, however the best bit is getting to see Dominic West in nothing but a very loose towel (hence the four stars instead of three)

Fantastic film to make you squirm whilst you think!! Just saw this at an advance preview and it is fantastic. If you like your a fan of Spanish horror like The Orphanage of Hierro then you will love this. Delibrately hiding key facts throughout the film to keep you guessing so ignore the reviews here trying to compare this to Paranormal Activity 3. This is a film where you have to use your brain, you have to concentrate and let the film take you on a journey and if you do then you will be justly rewarded with a scary ghost story. It builds and builds to an excellent ending , you just need a little bit of patience and a little bit of brain power to get you there.

I read alot of reviews on this site before watching this movie. In short, it was well worth it. This is a movie that demands attention, not because of complexity, but because of subtlety. The Awakening is a competent, lean, and interesting 'horror flick'. It may not provide many jumps or gasps, but instead it provides a series of 'chills' that lead escalate in intensity. I was concerned midway through the movie that it was losing focus. I was wrong, it actually contributed to the overall picture. Don't watch this movie if you are expecting tons of shock scares involving gore or terror. This movie provides a thoughtful examination into the mind of a skeptic, amidst a time where most of society was reeling from the trauma of World War 1. Its a wonderfully atmospheric, chilling tale that leads to solid conclusion.

Shouldn't be classified as a horror movie by any means, but for what it was it was really well written and brilliantly performed. The cinematography was beautiful and the storyline gave off vibes of both a Masterpiece Mystery and an M Night thriller.
