The classic film noir by John Huston, with a very sexy cameo by Marilyn Monroe and knock out job performance by Sterling Hayden. The lighting and camera work is phenomenal in this 'city under the city' caper.

The Grandpappy to the modern heist film, and excellent directing by the king of film noir, John Houston.

Sterling Hayden is so much taller than everyone else, it's kind of alarming. Otherwise, this is as good a caper movie as has ever been made. And while she's got a totally minor part, it is remarkable how mesmerizing Marilyn Monroe is when she stands in front of the camera.

John Huston helms the heist movie to which all other heist movies must aspire. Excellent, juicy dialogue; gorgeous, gritty cinematography; vicious characterizations from an impeccable cast (Sam Jaffe and James Whitmore are standouts); and a powerful, tragic sense of moral justice which lends the film an astonishingly effective conclusion.
