The American Astronaut (2001)

Samual Curtis's first mission in this bizarre science fiction musical comedy requires him to take a cat to a saloon on an asteroid. There, he meets his former dance partner (the Blueberry Pirate) and collects his payment: a device capable of producing a Real Live Girl. Including music by alternative rock group The Billy Nayer Show, this film began life as a live show with a loyal following.

-We'll throw a party, won't you come join us- This is what you'd get, if David Lynch directed a Roy Rogers meets Buck Rogers obsure oddyssey, while Tom Waits walked around the set inspiring those around him. É uma prova de que pra ter uma "tarde com filmes" divertida e leve não é preciso assistir comedinhas romanticas clichês nem filmes infato-juvenil. O nome de um dos personagens é The-Boy-Who-Actually-Saw-A-Woman's-Breast. Bobo? Sim, mas adorei. Cory McAbee (diretor, roteirista, ator, compositor das músicas, desenhista da nave e amigo do Jello Biafra haha) está de parabéns. Muito original, engraçado, tem músicas divertidas (e engraçadas de tão ridículas) e um visual bem interessante. Excelente fotografia. Me lembrou Rock Horror Picture Show, não só por ser musical sci-fi, mas também pelo tipo de humor. Podia ser mais longo, acaba rápido. Só assisti uma vez, mas tenho impressão que vai ser um desses filmes que eu vou assistir várias vezes.

My friend sat me down and had me watch this movie and my life was changed. The dancing, music, and dialoge all drive the movie to new levels of awkward, bizarre and amazing. If you're an adventuresome individual give it a go.

Gotta say that I loved it. I've got no idea what criteria to use to judge it by. It defies description. Visually, it's gorgeous, but the off-color musical numbers are definitely the highlight.
